As a first-time dog owner, I was naive about the realities of dog parenthood, and specifically about what it takes to raise one of these adorable, independent little sausage dogs. Frequently Asked Questions.
Dachshund is a German word meaning “badger hound” and is pronounced “dox-hoond”.
Dachshunds have a reputation for being stubborn and difficult to train, and in my experience as a first-time dog parent, this has proven to be true. I recommend you hire a professional trainer and begin training as soon as your puppy settles in.
With their long spines, dachshunds are susceptible to IVDD or intervertebral disc disease. This can occur when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae degenerate, bulge and press on the spinal cord causing pain and, potentially, paralysis. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and giving them plenty of exercise is important to help prevent this debilitating condition.
